2013 HPF Grants

  • Ocean Conservancy - $150,000.00 - The funds are being granted to support the Ocean Conservancy’s work in addressing and reducing ocean trash. Specifically, funds will be used for engaging industry and other innovators in solutions through the Trash Free Seas Alliance; creating and gathering a scientific panel for the purpose of increasing understanding and formulating better solutions; and in supporting essential supplies for the annual International Coastal Cleanup.
  • Natural Resource Defense Council  (NRDC) - $250,000.00 - The funds are being granted to support NRDC’s efforts related to the “Cloud of Commitments” that arose out of the Rio+20 Conference. Specifically, funds will be used to continue to maintain and improve the Cloud of Commitments website; to select and closely monitor the implementation of the selected cornerstone commitments; to organize roundtables in Washington, DC and New York; develop a set of metrics for evaluating the effectiveness of commitment registries and platforms; organize a major conference around the opening of the next United Nations General Assembly in September 2013.
  • Great Whale Conservancy - $27,000.00 - The funds are being granted to fund public education and advocacy efforts at creating pressure needed to convince the shipping industry to voluntarily adjust their traffic lanes and avoid critical Blue Whale feeding ground.
  • Pride Rock Wildlife Refuge - $10,000.00 - The funds are being granted build a facility to prepare food for the animals (big cats rescued from circuses; roadside zoos; pet trade; etc.) and emergency vet care.
  • Texas Conservation Alliance - $25,000.00 - The funds are being granted to assist with additional land acquisition for the Neches River Refuge; to promote the introduction of a bill to study the Neches as a Wild and Scenic River; to expand its successful campaign to teach the public and decision-makers about lower cost options for water supply; and to work on improving public access to the river.
  • Ryan´s Well - $12,500.00 - The funds are being granted to build wells and latrines in an effort to bring clean water and sanitation to people living in under developed communities.
  • Plastic Pollution Coalition - $20,000.00 - The funds are being granted to support Plastic Free Campuses, a global network of school and university campuses working to reduce their plastic footprint; and to support Think Beyond Plastic, an innovation contest for products and solutions to plastic pollution, specifically targeting entrepreneurs.
  • Green Spaces Alliance of South Texas - $17,500.00 - The funds are being granted for continued operating costs associated with the work of the organization which includes sustaining the natural environment and enhancing urban spaces through land conservation, community engagement, and education.
  • Florida Keys Wild Bird Center - $37,500.00 - The funds are being granted to assist with supporting the center’s internship program and to assist in paying for the construction of a flight cage.
  • Wildlife Rehabilitation and Recue - $27,500.00 - The funds are being granted to improve apprentice/intern training with an emphasis on preparing them for higher level positions and educating them about environmental stewardship; and to assist with the implementation of “Keeping Track”, an educational outreach program that teaches about animal protection and environmental responsibility.
  • See Turtles - $10,000.00 - The funds are being granted to support community based conservation projects that protect endangered Hawksbill hatchlings in El Salvador and Nicaragua; Leatherback hatchlings in Costa Rica; Green Turtle hatchlings in Costa Rica and Nicaragua; and Olive Ridley hatchlings in Nicaragua and Mexico.
  • Last Chance Forever - $29,500.00 - The funds are being granted to support birds of prey rescue efforts, including the return of injured birds to the wild. Funds will also be used to track birds after their release into the wild.
  • Therapet - $8,000.00 - The funds are being granted to help recruit volunteers; support volunteer/animal team training in the Therapet Skills Class. Specifically the funds will pay for the cost of a qualified Therapet Skills Class trainer for 6 classes and to supplement the annual rent on an adequate training facility.
  • Consejo para Defensa de la Patagonia - $37,500.00 - The funds are being granted to continue to pursue their campaign strategies during this critical year: Ecosistemas, the Citizen’s Coalition of Aysen Life Reserve (CCARV), and the Corporation for the Development of Aysen (CODESA). They continue to work toward opposing and preventing the building of 5 massive dams in wild Patagonia.
  • San Antonio Botanical Society - $14,000.00 - The funds are being granted to continue funding a plant research intern position which will include the continued development of the germination protocol for plants in the Center for Plant Conservation Project and continue research on these endangered species.
  • San Antonio River Foundation - $20,000.00 - Funds are being granted to the development of Confluence Park, which is currently a vacant lot that will be converted to a riverfront park that will include a learning center, as well as easy access to outdoor recreation that is otherwise not available in that lower income urban area.
  • Open Space Institute - $37,500.00 - Funds are being granted to fund staff members who work in the Catskills farming projects, including: the creation of model farms and partnerships for the perpetuation of sustainable farming in the region and to teach best practices with the overall goal of increasing sustainable food in the region; supporting the Meridale Grassfed Beef Project, a sustainable model project of beef farming without the negative environmental impacts; supporting the Center for Discovery Partnership, an innovator in sustainable agriculture which aims to develop farmer training and farmer friendly land lease programs; and Diversified Incubator Farm Models which are beacons for sustainable agriculture in their communities.
  • Coastal Bend Bays & Estuaries Program - $25,000.00 - The funds are being granted to increase public awareness of nesting birds including the installation of “nest cams” on nesting island, as well as public education about declining habitats, nesting disturbance, etc. The funds will also be used to support predator management to ensure that nesting islands remain safe to the birds.
  • Coastal Bend Bays & Estuaries Program - $12,500.00 - The funds are being granted to support saving Diamondback Terrapins from death in crab traps. Specifically, funds will be used for the development and study of modified crab traps that reduce the mortality of turtles that find their way into the traps.
  • Caddo Lake Institute - $37,500.00 - Funds are being granted to support healthy watershed work, including a new project to reintroduce paddlefish and recover other endangered fish species, as well as a project to control invasive plants that threaten fish habitat, recreation, and the local economy.
