2015 HPF Grants

  • Ocean Conservancy  (Nancy Bellett; Gloria Arecchi; Tad Hollomon; Bob Werner) - $155,000.00 - The funds are being granted to continue supporting the OC’s work in addressing and reducing ocean trash and plastics (Trash Free Seas Alliance). Specifically, funds will be used to: launch a sustained campaign to persuade the world’s foremost producers of plastics and consumer goods to accept primary responsibility for solving the plastics problem; support annual beach clean-up; and indirect administrative expenses. The OC will decide before the meeting how to use the additional.
  • Ocean Conservancy  (Nancy Bellett and Tad Hollomon) - $45,000.00 - Presentation by Nick Mallos (by phone) –The funds are being granted to help leverage funds totaling $100,000 from other Foundations in support of this project. Specifically, the funds will be used to: create an action tool kit for our Sea Turtle partners to help expand their local efforts; staff and travel time to regional meetings of sea turtle experts and volunteers; and to maintain Clean Swell (Sea Turtle data collection tool).
  • Florida Keys Wild Bird Center  (Tad Hollomon) - $15,000.00 - Funds are being granted to assist in purchasing an emergency rescue vehicle to replace the older, unreliable one that the center currently uses. The center responds to over 500n calls to rescue injured birds within a 100 mile radius of the center.
  • SEE Turtles  (Nancy Bellett) - $10,000.00 - The funds are being granted to help pay for 2 workshops in Nicaragua to train 40 teachers and take them to visit the project sites. The funds will also be used to work with local partners to organize field trips for school children to visit turtle project sites and learn first-hand about conservation efforts and how they help the turtles.
  • Nature and Culture International  (Gloria Arrechi) - $35,000.00 - The funds are being granted to help expand rainforest preservation into 45 new regions, including 3 new countries – including 100,000 acres in Ecuador; 250,000 acres in Bolivia; and 71,750 acres in Columbia.
  • Texas Conservation Alliance  (John Bauer) - $15,000.00 - The funds are being granted to: raise the visibility of the Neches River among people outside of the East Texas Region; expand TCA’s water recycling program; and to organize input to the upcoming State Water Plan revision.
  • Dallas Arboretum  (John Bauer) - $20,000.00 - The funds are being granted to: help underwrite the cost of the Arboretum’s children’s science educational programs. The program strives to educate children about earth and life sciences, as well as conservation.
  • IPE – Instituto de Pesquisas Ecologicas  (Wayne Bellett) - $30,000.00 - Funds are being granted to develop an educational program for the native inhabitants of a region of rural Brazil where the black-lion tamarin resides emphasizing conservation, rainforest protection, etc. Specifically the funds will be used to train teachers; train local teenagers on how to produce trees from seeds (reforestation); hold community events emphasizing the goals of these programs; and work with the local women offering workshops on making local handicrafts that portray the black-lion tamarin and to help develop a fair trade market in which they can sell these products.
  • Wildlife Conservation Network  (Wayne Bellett) - $5,000.00 - Funds are being granted to fund the organizations work with “former” poachers, in the mountains of Central Asia, who are now monitoring and protecting the snow leopards instead of killing them. They also work with local “herders” to problem solve keeping their livestock protected from the snow leopards, so that they do not feel they need to kill the leopards.
  • The Peregrine Falcon Fund  (Ann Edwards) - $25,000.00 - The funds are being granted to: assist with a grassland restoration initiative in South Texas that create large patches of savannah habitat for new Aplomado Flacon territories while providing incentives for landowner participation; identify public and private sources of funds for management of habitat on private lands; and monitor territory occupancy, total number of adult birds, and Aplomado Falcon sightings across the South Texas project area landscape.
  • Pride Rock Wildlife Refuge  (Ann Edwards) - $10,000.00 - The funds are being granted to fund 20% of the cost of construction of a 2,950 sq. ft. enclosure to house up to 4 big cats and additionally place a perimeter fence around all of the future expansion acreage. The funds will be used as a match for additional donations.
  • Rainforest Partnership  (John Bellett) - $25,000.00 - The funds are being granted to assist the Achuar (indigenous community who live in Peru and Ecuador Amazon rainforest region) developing and building a Traditional Medical Center, training and logistical support for the center, construction of a community well, and providing cultural and environmental education. Strengthening this community, who are committed to preserving the rainforest, will help them to maintain their strong voice in opposing the intrusion of powerful outside interests.
  • World Animal Protection  (John Bellett) - $10,000.00 - Funds are being granted to provide support for an 18 day rescue and training expedition in Southeast Alaska during June and July 2015. A team of wildlife biologists and veterinarians will track and identify endangered Steller Sea Lions who are entangled in plastics and ghost nets throughout their haulout sites and rookeries. Entangled Sea Lions will be anaesthetized, disentangled, tagged, and released. The funds will specifically be used for purchasing dart guns, anesthesia drugs, satellite tracking tags, and boat fuel.
  • Friends of Government Canyon  (Mike Casey) - $20,000.00 - The funds are being granted to assist in restoring a 10 acre natural area to its former grassland conditions by eliminating all existing plant species, plowing/tilling, and replanting with native grass seeds that are historically endemic to the area.
  • Land Heritage Institute Foundation  (Mike Casey) - $15,000.00 - Funds are being granted to build infrastructure (storage facility, toilets, sewer systems, etc.) at a trailhead/comfort station for visitors/hikers using the Los Caminos Naturales Trail System. The station will be used for accommodating large student groups in learning activities focused on providing environmental literacy training to those who use the trails. This trail system will eventually link to the Mission Reach area connecting the Missions with downtown San Antonio.
  • Catskill Mountain Keeper  (Jack Murray) - $17,500.00 - Funds are being granted to help implement initiatives and follow-ups that come out of the Biloxi Conference/Annual Summit (Extreme Energy Extraction Collaborative) which will focus on the Gulf/Southern area of the US. The grant will specifically enable CMK to devote staff time to efforts to continue to coordinate actions and share strategies with E3C partners post-summit. And to hire a short-term marketing and membership building consultant to audit CMK’s available donor and activist resources and to make recommendations for growth to further empower the organization.
  • Green Sports Alliance  (Jack Murray) - $17,500.00 - Funds are being granted to help launch the Mascots Forever Pilot Program in 2015, with the ultimate goal being to “connect at-risk species and sports fan”, educating fans about the problem, influencing their behavior, and generating funding to support species preservation programs. The funds will specifically be used to pay for staff time, advisors, and consultants working on implementing the Mascots Forever Brand Platform.
  • Coastal Bend Bays & Estuaries Program  (Bob Werner) - $30,000.00 - The funds are being granted to install signage around all of the rookery islands managed by CBBEP with the intent of protecting the birds, their nests and their young from human disturbance. A portion of the funds will also be used for planting and establishing native brushes and plants on the barren rockery islands. These plants are critical to provide nest structures and in preventing the establishment of harmful exotic vegetation.
  • Elephant Aid International  (Rita Braeutigam) - $35,000.00 - Funds are being granted to assist in constructing chain free corrals for captive elephants in Asia. These particular elephants are used for anti-poaching patrol and to transport conservation research teams. Elephant Aid International exclusively adheres to Compassionate Elephant Management practices.
  • Waterkeeper Alliance  (Jacob Scherr) - $35,000.00 - Funds are being granted to help develop a program to create new Waterkeeper Affiliates in the US Southwest. Recruiting existing organizations that are already working on addressing waterway protection and will benefit from discussion and eventual association with the alliance. The Alliance will undertake a “Southwest Regional Threat assessment” to identify existing and emerging waterway issues and to help establish priorities for a new regional network.
  • Charleston Audubon Society  (Blake Werner) - $30,000.00 - Funds are being granted to acquire and install chemical toilets for use during educational and environmental field trips out to the preserve and for printed material for their educational programs.
